01 Overview and Size of the Global Market

The wood veneer adhesive market, as an important part of architectural adhesives, is steadily growing along with the development of the global construction industry and the furniture manufacturing sector. In 2023, the global market size of polyurethane sealants reached approximately 20.7 billion yuan. It is projected to reach 26.7 billion yuan by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.2% over the next six years.

The Asia-Pacific region is the largest market for sealants globally, accounting for over 50% of the total. The North America and Europe regions follow with market shares of approximately 20% and 25% respectively. The Chinese market has particularly outstanding performance, with the value of building sealants reaching 13 billion yuan in 2024, and wood veneer sealant accounts for a considerable proportion.

02 Product Quality and Technological Evolution

The quality of wood veneer glue directly determines the final decorative effect and service life. High-quality wood veneer glue should possess characteristics such as high bonding strength, good elasticity, weather resistance and environmental friendliness.

Two-component polymer copolymer is the current mainstream technology. It is developed and produced by adopting advanced process technology and using new water-based polymers and imported raw materials. These products usually meet the Japanese F★★★★ and European E1 environmental protection standards, and even reach the high environmental protection requirement of the limit detection value of formaldehyde release at 0.08mg/m³.

In terms of technological innovation, silane-modified polymer (MS Polymer) serves as a new type of sealant base material, possessing the advantages of both silicone and polyurethane. The GENIOSIL® XM series launched by Wacker Chemical can produce low modulus sealants with a modulus less than 0.4 N/mm² and a rebound rate greater than 70%.

For special application environments, such as the humid subtropical climate in Hong Kong, the Nanomaterials and Advanced Materials Research Institute (NAMI) has developed a bionic silicone sealant solution. Even when applied to damp surfaces, it demonstrates extremely excellent durability, which is superior to other similar products on the market.

03 Installation Process and Construction Standards

The correct installation process is crucial for achieving the performance of wood veneer adhesives. Before construction, the base material must be treated: use a dedicated cleaner to remove impurities such as oil stains, dust, and moisture from the base material surface, ensuring that the base is dry, clean, and flat.

The construction environment has strict standards: the temperature should be between 5℃ and 35℃, the humidity should be less than 75% RH, and the moisture content of the substrate should be controlled at 8-12% (for wood). For two-component products, the main agent and the curing agent are usually mixed evenly in a ratio of 100:10 before use, and the amount of glue applied is generally around 200-300g/m².

The pressure and time requirements are also clearly specified: Softwood needs a pressure of 0.6 Mpa or higher; Hardwood requires a pressure of 1.0 Mpa or higher. The pressure application time varies according to temperature: no less than 60 minutes at 15℃; no less than 20 minutes at 20-30℃.

Post-pressure relief curing is equally important: After pressure relief, it should be stored for a period of time before moving on to the next processing step. For testing purposes, please conduct the test at least 3 days later to ensure the accuracy of the results. For the boiling water test, the test should be conducted 7 days later.

04 Technical Standard System and Certification

The global technical standard system for wood veneer adhesives is constantly being improved. The main international standards include: the American standard ASTM C1184, the European standard ETAG002, and the ISO 11600 standard, which classify the physical and mechanical properties of sealants.

The Chinese standard system is relatively complete, mainly including: GB/T 23261-2009 "Building Sealant for Stone Materials", GB/T 14683-2017 "Silicone and Modified Silicone Building Sealants", GB 16776-2005 "Building Silicone Structural Sealants" and others.

In terms of environmental protection certification, in 2021, the China National Certification and Accreditation Administration issued the "Implementation Rules for Green Product Certification", including sealant in the scope of green product certification. The certification model includes application for certification, initial inspection, product sampling inspection, evaluation and approval of certification results, and post-certification supervision.

The EU Ecological Design Regulation 2024/1781 came into effect on July 18, 2024. This new regulation replaces the previous Ecological Design Directive 2009/125/EC and significantly expands the scope of ecological design requirements. It imposes higher environmental protection standards on wood veneer adhesive products.

05 Diversification of Application Areas

The application scope of wood veneer glue is extremely broad, mainly covering the following aspects:

Furniture manufacturing field: Wood veneer glue is widely used in the furniture manufacturing industry. It is applicable to doors and windows, wooden floors, hardwood, fine woodwork boards, laminated timber gluing, surface gluing of decorative panels, and the production of high-end veneered wood products, etc. Resorin, as a natural coating, is made from the resin secreted by termites and is often used in classical furniture, musical instruments, and the restoration of antiques, providing protection, beauty, and unparalleled luster.

Architectural decoration field: Wood veneer adhesives are widely used in architectural decoration and can be applied in various fields such as decorative panels, fireproof doors, wooden doors, cabinets, wardrobes, etc. Products like "Jiabian'an" A-level flame-retardant all-purpose real wood veneer are suitable for residential buildings, villas, clubhouses, hotels, restaurants, exhibition spaces, and conference auditoriums, etc.

Special application environment: For medical spaces and food processing areas, wood veneer coatings with antibacterial properties are particularly important. The "Habian" nano antibacterial uncoated wood veneer has an antibacterial rate of up to 99.9%, which can prevent cross-infection and minimize bacterial infections in medical spaces to the greatest extent.
